The South Central IRC qualifying race took us to the beautiful county of Wiltshire, at Bowood House. This was a perfect location set in stunning parkland. However, the event just happened to be on one of the hottest days on record for June in England (32 degrees). With the extreme heat, we all knew it was going to be a tough day for all participants and this situation wasn’t helped by a very long transition from the lake up a hill 750m into bike transition. Our young athletes of all ages coped exceedingly well, many of them opting to take their wetsuits off at the lake, and carry them up – this was by far the best option.
After a relatively flat bike course incorporating laps around the parkland, it was back into the main park for an undulating scenic run and a steep hill up to the finish. This was a fantastic venue albeit a challenging race on the day. The competition was tough as this was also the qualifier for the South West region too. Mabel has kindly submitted a race report as she achieved 2nd in the youth girl category:
“This weekend I raced at Bowood House Triathlon and came 2nd. Firstly, I was really happy with coming 3rd out of the water- I managed to stay in the front pack and work with the other girls. The bike was brutal, especially in the heat, but it was technical which meant I was able to use the course to my advantage. This allowed me to make up considerable time and go into my run stronger than I anticipated. The race at Bowood exceeds many of my expectations. Coming 2nd has given me a big boost in trusting my ability and coaches after coming back from injury this season”.
